Sunrise and golden hour are the two windows that consistently produce the best results. The light is directional, warm, and flattering across all skin tones. Crowds thin dramatically. Popular spots that are impossible to shoot cleanly at midday become manageable, or empty entirely. Sunrise is the quietest window of any day in Paris. Golden hour, in the hour before sunset, is my preference for most engagement sessions because the light is reliable and the city slows down.
Midday light is harder and flat. I work with shade and backlighting when sessions fall during those hours, but the results take more effort to achieve. If you have flexibility in your schedule, give me the morning or the late afternoon.
Season changes what Paris looks like and how long your usable light window runs. Spring and autumn bring mild temperatures and balanced natural colour. Spring adds blossom in gardens and parks. Autumn turns the tree-lined streets golden. Summer evenings run long, giving a wide golden hour window but peak tourist volumes during the day. Winter sessions are quieter across nearly every location and produce a clean, stripped-back version of the city that photographs with its own distinct character.
TipIf you are unsure between sunrise and golden hour, golden hour is easier on logistics and still gives you beautiful light. Sunrise is for couples who want the city to themselves.
Avoid large logos, busy patterns, and anything you would not wear again. Classic colours photograph well and age well: navy, cream, black, earth tones, soft gold. Solid colours consistently outperform prints in the final images. Layers matter in Paris because the temperature shifts throughout a session, especially at sunrise and in autumn or winter. Comfortable walking shoes are essential. Sessions cover 3 to 5 kilometres depending on the package.
Your outfits should coordinate without matching exactly. If one person is dressed formally, the other should be at a similar level. Mismatched formality reads as unplanned in photos. Accessories work well when kept clean and deliberate. For engagement sessions, details matter: nails, the ring, a sharp fit. Think about how the outfit looks on the street, not just in a mirror. Most people are not comfortable in front of a camera. That is normal and it is my job to fix it, not yours. I give clear direction throughout the session: where to stand, how to move, where to look, how to hold each other. You do not need to know how to pose. You need to show up and follow the lead.
The best frames from any engagement session are not the ones where both people are frozen and staring at the lens. They come from movement, from being directed into a natural interaction and then releasing it. I watch for the moment after the pose, when the guard comes down and the real expression surfaces. That is the photograph worth printing.
Sessions feel like a guided walk with a friend who happens to be pointing a camera at you. The direction is constant but not stiff. You will laugh, you will move, you will forget the camera is there. The photos will show it.
Light rain can work. It changes the mood, clears the tourists, and creates reflections on the cobblestones and pavements that a dry day cannot produce.
