This is the brief I give every couple before a session. It covers the three body rules, what to do with your hands and eyes, how to adjust for stairs, bridges, quays and gardens, and how to handle the Eiffel Tower sparkle after dark. It is written for couples who have never been photographed professionally and want to arrive knowing what to do. Paris surfaces change how a pose works, so a pose that works on a flat lawn can fail on a steep staircase.

CORE RULES

How Do You Pose for Couples Photos in Paris?

Use three rules: angle your bodies toward each other, keep one point of contact, and put your weight on your back foot. Almost every couples pose is a variation of those three.

Angle first. Standing square to the camera flattens both of you. Turn a quarter of the way toward your partner so your shoulders are no longer parallel to the lens. Then choose one point of contact: a held hand, a hand on the lower back, or foreheads close together. One point of contact keeps both faces visible. A full-body hug hides one of you.

Weight last. Shift onto the back foot and let the front knee soften. The hips relax, your posture leans a little toward your partner, and the pose stops looking rehearsed. "I fix the feet first, because the rest of the body follows them," Finzi says.

Rule 1
Quarter turn toward each other
Rule 2
One point of contact
Rule 3
Weight on the back foot

TipIf a pose feels awkward, change the feet before you change anything else.

HANDS AND FACES

What Should You Do With Your Hands and Eyes?

Give your hands a job, and look at each other more than at the lens. A job can be holding a hand, resting on a shoulder, straightening a collar, or tucking hair back. Hands with no task curl into fists or hang stiff. Hands with a task look relaxed.

For the eyes, I alternate. In some frames you look at each other, and in others you look just past the camera. Looking at the lens for every frame is how stiff expressions happen. When you look at each other, say something small: what you want for dinner, or the worst joke you know. A laugh or a quiet smile arrives faster from a sentence than from the instruction to smile.

Keep the face soft. Let your jaw release, breathe out just before the shutter, and tilt your chin slightly forward rather than up. If one of you is much taller, the taller person bends one knee or leans in. That closes the height gap without either of you looking like you are posing.

TipBreathe out slowly before each frame. It drops the shoulders and softens the face.

MOVEMENT

Movement Prompts That Replace Fixed Poses

Walking beats standing still for most couples. A session already involves a lot of walking: you cover roughly 3-5 km depending on your package, so movement is built into the day. I use that to give you simple actions in place of fixed poses.

The prompts I use most: walk toward me hand in hand and slow down on my cue. Stop mid-step and turn to face each other. One of you takes a half step ahead and looks back. Share a slow, small dance step. Touch foreheads and stay there for a breath. Each prompt gives your body a task, and the expressions follow.

A session mixes posed, candid and movement-based frames, and I direct all of it. You do not need to remember anything. I call each action out one at a time, and you follow.

TipSlow down your walking pace. Fast walking blurs the frame and tightens your faces.

PARIS SURFACES

Posing on Stairs, Bridges and Quays

Stairs let you separate your heights. At Trocadero the main plaza is where everyone stands. The lower terrace and the side staircases are quieter and give cleaner backgrounds. On steps, stand one step apart so your heads sit at different levels, and keep your hands connected between you. That gives a layered composition without extra effort.

Montmartre is the opposite. The stairs are steep and the streets are narrow, so you pose closer and lower. Early morning or late evening avoids the crowds, and the narrow streets get filtered afternoon light. Bir-Hakeim works differently again. The metro runs overhead and the steel arches create graphic lines, so walk along the lower walkway and let the columns frame you. Keep your pose simple there, because the structure already carries the image.

On the Seine quays the lower quay puts you at water level, with the Tower rising above the tree line. Stay a comfortable distance from the water's edge, and use the open space to walk toward me or turn to face each other. Reflections do the rest.

TipOn cobblestones and steps, shoes you can walk in comfortably will relax your posture more than any pose cue.

GARDENS

Posing in the Luxembourg Gardens

In the Luxembourg Gardens, pose along the paths and pool edges, not on the grass. The Sénat, which runs the garden, lists what is forbidden on its practical information page, and the first item is "Marcher sur les pelouses, cueillir les plantes", which means walking on the lawns and picking plants.

That rules out sitting or lying on the lawn, so the posing changes. The Médicis Fountain area has shade and a long reflecting pool that works like a natural aisle. Walking prompts suit it well: slow steps side by side, a pause, a turn toward each other. The garden opens at sunrise and is nearly empty for the first hour, which gives you room to move without an audience.

TipPlan walking poses here and leave the lying-down ones for another location.

NIGHT

How Do You Pose During the Eiffel Tower Sparkle?

Set your position before the hour, because the sparkle lasts only five minutes. The Eiffel Tower sparkles for five minutes at the start of every hour, beginning with the first full hour after nightfall. The official Eiffel Tower site confirms the tower sparkles every night.

Season moves the timing. In winter the first sparkle can come as early as 5 pm, and in midsummer it pushes back to 10 pm. I plan the arrival around that. We walk to the spot, you settle into your first pose, and the sparkle arrives behind you.

Keep night poses close and simple. Low light rewards stillness and small movements: a forehead touch, a slow turn, a held embrace with both faces visible. The Night Session is €450, one hour after sunset, at one location with the Eiffel Tower sparkle and city light atmosphere.

CLOTHING

How Clothing Changes Your Posing

Clothes decide how freely you can move. Choose classic colours: navy, cream, black, earth tones or soft gold. Avoid large logos and busy patterns, because they pull attention from your faces. Wear layers, since Paris weather shifts through the day, and wear walking shoes.

Think about how each layer behaves in motion. A long coat or scarf moves well when you walk and adds shape to the frame. Thick sleeves bulk up in a close embrace, so keep your arms loose and use a single hand for contact. Flowing fabric works with wind: turn slowly and let it move.

TipWear what makes you feel confident. Confidence shows up in posture before it shows up on the face.

COMMON FIXES

Fixes for Stiff Poses and Camera Shyness

If you feel stiff, move. Shake out your shoulders, walk a few steps, and start again. Stiffness usually comes from standing still while thinking about the camera. A movement prompt breaks that loop within a minute.

If one partner is more comfortable than the other, I turn the attention inward. The shy partner looks at the confident one, and the confident one leads the movement. Each person gets one job. Camera-shy partners relax when they have something to do and someone to look at.

If you worry about height differences, steps and bent knees fix them. If you worry about your smile, laugh instead of smiling on cue. I give clear direction throughout, and I leave space for natural moments to happen on their own.

TipTell me early what you dislike about your photos. I will avoid those angles.
