Weekday sunrise is quietest, late evening is second. Crowd levels by hour, day and month
The quietest time to shoot at the Eiffel Tower is the first hour of daylight on a weekday, and the second-best window is late evening once the Tower's lights are on. Midday and the hours around sunset are the busiest, and so are weekends and the summer months.
This guide is for visitors who want photos with the Tower and without a crowd behind them. It covers crowd levels by hour, weekday and month, the quieter spots around the Tower, how the evening sparkle changes the picture, and how to book a session around all of it. The attendance patterns come from the Tower's own operator. The on-location advice comes from my sessions beside the Tower.
The quietest time is sunrise, and a weekday sunrise is the emptiest of all. The Trocadéro forecourt is the most popular spot for a photo with the Tower behind you, so you will rarely be alone there except very early in the morning. That matches what I see on the ground. Tour groups and street sellers arrive after the first light, and the plaza fills quickly.
Early light also gives you a practical advantage. The sun is low, the sky is soft, and the Tower is lit evenly without the harsh contrast of midday. Sunrise colour fades fast, so arrive before it, not at it.
"At sunrise I am usually set up before anyone else has a phone out, and I stay on the side of the plaza, not in the middle," Finzi says. "The first ten minutes give you the cleanest background of the day."
TipCheck the exact sunrise time for your date before you set an alarm. It moves by hours across the year.
| Package | Price | Duration | Photos | Locations |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Essential | €300 | 1 hour | 30 photos | 1 location |
| Signature | €500 | 2 hours | 50 photos | 2 locations |
| Prestige | €800 | 3 hours | 60 photos | 3 locations |
The operator of the Tower publishes a day-part rating on its attendance page. It rates the morning and the middle of the day as high, the late afternoon as medium, and the late evening as low, with the evening rising to high in peak season. These ratings describe visitors at the monument, including ticket and security lines. They are still a useful guide to how full the surrounding esplanades feel.
One caution on morning advice. Tips to visit just after the Tower opens are about shorter ticket queues. They do not mean the photo spots are empty at that hour. For photographs from the outside, the quiet window is before the day-trippers arrive, which is dawn.
Sunset is the other trap. Sunset hours are among the busiest times around the Tower, as visitors arrive for golden-hour views and city lights. Golden hour is still my favourite light for portraits, so I move away from the main plaza when I shoot it. The quieter spots are listed below.
TipGolden hour and sunset share the crowd. Dawn and late evening do not.
Yes, weekdays are quieter, and midweek is the quietest part of the week. The official Eiffel Tower website says "Saturdays and Sundays are the busiest days of the week." It adds that outside peak season, school holidays and public holidays, attendance is usually lowest on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays.
The same page notes that the Eiffel Tower is open on Tuesdays, unlike museums in Paris. That helps if your itinerary has a gap on a day the museums are shut. A Tuesday sunrise at the Tower is a strong plan.
Weekday dawn is also where the weekday advantage is biggest. The Tower is close to empty at that hour, and midweek early dawn is the nearest you will get to having it to yourself.
TipIf your dates are fixed and include a weekend, put the shoot at dawn, not later in the day.
January, February, October and November have the fewest crowds. The official attendance table rates those months low, and it rates July and August maximum. The same table puts March to May and September at medium, and December at medium as well. The operator says the busiest period runs from the end of June to the beginning of September.
Season changes the light as well as the crowd. In summer, sunrise comes very early and the evening sparkle starts late. In late autumn, sunrise runs from the early part of the morning to well into it across November, and sunset arrives in the late afternoon. That means a dawn session in the quiet months does not need a pre-dawn start, and the Tower is lit early in the evening.
The trade-off is weather. Cold and rain are more likely in the low months, so layers matter. Light rain gives dramatic skies and a quieter plaza, and I work in most conditions. If conditions are poor, rescheduling is free anytime.
TipIn peak season, dawn and late evening are your only quiet windows.
The Trocadéro main plaza is where everyone shoots. The lower terrace and the side staircases give you the same Tower with fewer people in the frame. If you only have a short slot, shoot from the stairs, which gives you a clean angle without a crowd behind you. A few steps away, a quieter spot sits at the top of rue de la Manutention, on avenue du Président-Wilson, beside the Palais de Tokyo.
Pont de Bir-Hakeim is the one I use most for quiet. At sunrise it is nearly empty, and by mid-morning it fills with visitors. Timing matters here more than almost anywhere else. For late afternoon, the Seine bank between Pont de l'Alma and Pont d'Iéna has quiet alcoves where you can be alone even in peak season. It works best at sunset, when the river turns gold.
Camoëns is the intimate option. My base is on Avenue de Camoëns, beside the Tower, so I know how that area behaves hour by hour. If the Trocadéro plaza is full when we arrive, we move.
TipPlan for walking. A session covers 3-5 km depending on your package.
Late evening is the second-best window, and it adds the Tower's light show. The Eiffel Tower sparkles for 5 minutes every hour after dark. The first sparkle falls on the first round hour after sunset. That time shifts through the year, so the sparkle schedule follows the sunset schedule.
The crowd is different after dark. The official rating for the late evening is low outside peak season, and fewer families are out. In summer the evening is still busy, so the further you are from the main plaza, the better.
"For a sparkle shot I decide the position before the hour, not during the five minutes," Finzi says. "The sparkle gives you almost no time to move, so we stand where the light and the background are already right."
TipArrive during the golden-light stage and wait for the sparkle, instead of arriving as it starts.
I offer sunrise, golden hour and evening sessions, and a sunrise session suits one or two locations. Essential is €300 for 1 hour, 30 photos and 1 location, which is enough for a single quiet spot. Signature is €500 for 2 hours, 50 photos and 2 locations, and it is the most popular. It lets us pair a Trocadéro stair at dawn with Bir-Hakeim before the bridge fills. Prestige is €800 for 3 hours, 60 photos and 3 locations. The Night Session is €450.
I recommend booking at least 2-4 weeks in advance, especially during peak season, April to October. A €30 non-refundable deposit locks your date. Rescheduling is free anytime, so a bad forecast on a dawn session does not cost you the slot. Gallery delivery is within 24 hours.
Tell me your dates and the session you have in mind. I will pick the day and hour from the crowd pattern above, and I will plan the route.
TipPick a session. Choose a date. I handle the rest.
Choose a weekday, ideally Tuesday to Thursday, outside school and public holidays. Choose a low month if your dates are flexible, and look up the sunrise time for your date. Plan to be on location before the sun is up, not at sunrise.
Wear layers and comfortable walking shoes. Keep the outfit classic and avoid large logos and busy patterns. Have a backup plan for the evening sparkle, because it can be your second quiet window, and ask for a position away from the main plaza.
Quick answers to the questions visitors ask before they book.
“We did sunrise at Trocadero because Finzi recommended it. We were practically alone. The light was otherworldly. These are our favorite photos ever taken.”
